Philosophy of Music Teaching

  • Academic and social development of students

  • The classroom as a brave space

  • Student Centered Learning

  • Teacher reflection and development

Academic and Social Development

I Believe:

  • Music has the power to improve math, linguistics, and critical thinking skills

  • In a STEM focused world, it is important to acknowledge the impact music can have on a student's academic performance

  • Music allows students to not only express their emotions, but empathize with the emotions of others.

  • Ensemble work helps improve student's teamwork and socialization skills

Creating a Brave Space

I Believe:

  • Brave Space: a space that goes beyond making student's feel safe, but a space where students can be their true authentic selves

  • Music and performing is a vulnerable art

  • Important to give students space to express themselves, share stories and experiences, and get to know each other beyond just a name and a face

Student Centered Learning

I Believe:

  • Student centered learning is essential to the growth of students and allows them to take ownership of their learning

  • Intrinsic motivation is easily developed when students are at the center of the learning process

  • Teacher is to act as a guide and facilitator of the learning

Teacher Reflection and Development

I Believe:

  • Educators should never stop working to improve their craft

  • Teacher reflection is an essential part of the process in developing better teaching practice

  • Lifelong learning should not just be a goal for students, but also a hallmark of being an educator

  •  Developing your skills as a musician and educator is the key to helping your students achieve success
